If you find yourself wandering the charming streets of Nevada City, you've got to stop by Heartwood Annex, a delightful café that’s making waves in the local food scene. Located right at 239 Commercial St, this cozy spot is not just about the food; it’s about an experience, a philosophy, and a culinary journey that balances health, flavor, and local sourcing.

The café specializes in a vibrant selection of noodle dishes that are both comforting and innovative. At the heart of their menu is the Annex Ramen (US$21.00), a bowl of luscious broth filled with chewy noodles that come alive with every slurp. Or perhaps you're in the mood for something with a kick; their Tantan Ramen (US$23.00) perfectly marries nutty, spicy flavors with an unforgettable depth of taste. For a healthier twist, try their Vegan Pho (US$17.00), bursting with fresh veggies that bring warmth and nourishment. And if you're dining with little ones, the Kids Amen (US$12.00) provides a delightful taste adventure without overwhelming the palate.

But don’t stop at ramen! The menu also features enticing Noodle Bowls like the Dan Dan Noodles (US$19.00) and the irresistible Yakisoba (US$20.00), both bringing a unique flair to Asian-inspired comfort food. For a real treat, the café excels in their crispy fried options like the Fried Chicken Karaage (US$15.00) and its friendlier vegetarian counterpart, Fried Veggie Karaage (US$13.00). Loyal patrons rave about the Chicken Karaage, which Tanya Dantus described as “Crispy, GF, organic,” paired with their delectable white sauce that takes the dish to the next level.

The ambiance at Heartwood Annex is welcoming and laid-back, infused with a rustic charm that encourages you to stay a while. It's an intimate space where health-conscious eaters and ramen aficionados can feel right at home—perfect for a casual lunch or a cozy dinner. Customizable options mean you can tweak your order to perfectly suit your cravings or dietary needs, as Mark Savella did when he swapped pork for chicken and was thrilled with the result.

Whether you're just grabbing a quick bite or settling in for a leisurely meal, Heartwood Annex promises an experience that goes beyond typical café fare. Their commitment to local produce and organic ingredients is evident in every dish, making each dining moment something special. Plus, sipping on an elderberry elixir while munching on their Shiitake Fritters (US$10.00) will not only tantalize your taste buds but also leave you buzzing with joy. As Brandon Gonzalez aptly put it, “Great!”

So next time you're in Nevada City, treat yourself to Heartwood Annex—a true gem waiting to be discovered!

Y’all ever have a hippy burrito before? Brown rice and black beans and lacking in grease and cheese? It is not even close to the experience you get from an authentic burrito but yet somehow, it’s still kind of good?? That’s what this ramen is. They are not purporting to be authentic, but if you want something healthier, filled with local meat and produce, chewy yummy noodles and still absolutely tasty in its own right (with added Tamari) then you should absolutely eat here.

The shiitake fritters and the elderberry elixir were great! Can't wait to come back!

Love this place. Second year in a row visiting & I gotta say that while their Annex Ramen is delicious, what really takes the cake for me is their Chicken Karaage. Yum! Crispy, GF, organic— that alone is unique (haven’t found another one in California that offers that). The white sauce that accompanies is delicious. I love it with lemon squeezed onto it. Highly recommend! And yes- for our final night this stay we got an order for me and another order for my son. P.S. I asked to sample their homemade green Sriracha and it was SO tasty!!

Growing up in the Bay Area and waiting in those long lines in San Francisco and San Jose, this spot really knows how to do ramen right! I tried the Tantan Style Ramen and swapped the pork for Kaarage Chicken, and let me tell you, it was amazing. I love pork too, and I can only imagine it would’ve been awesome, but since it doesn't sit well with me, I went with the chicken instead. The broth was super flavorful, and everything just hit the spot. You can really tell they put a ton of love into that 17-hour bone broth. One of the reviews on here said the broth was flavorless & the noodles were mushy, but I had the complete opposite experience. The noodles were golden, with the perfect consistency for slurping. The chicken was also golden and crispy on the outside but juicy on the inside. The staff was super friendly, and the place had a cute, cozy vibe with an industrial twist. I loved checking out the local artwork on the walls. Overall, you’ve got to try this ramen place out. You definitely won’t regret it!
